Description of Insomnia :-
Insomnia is a common sleep disorder. Insomnia is the difficulty in falling asleep or staying asleep. Insomnia is such a problem. Can make it difficult to fall asleep or have difficulty falling asleep, or cause you to wake up too early and have difficulty falling asleep again. When you wake up you feel tired. Insomnia can impair not only your mood, but also your energy level, your quality of life, work performance and health.
Insomnia is a common problem affecting about one-tenth of adults. In this, children also suffer from insomnia.
Causes & Risk Factors :-
Insomnia can be chronic or short-term. Having trouble falling asleep due to short-term insomnia:
1. Any traumatic event in life that causes stress, such as divorce or the death of a loved one,
2. Worrying Before the Exam,
3. anxiety Before the Interview,
4. Pain or discomfort due to temporary illness,
5. disturbance, such as caused by noise,
6. Unfamiliar surroundings,
Chronic insomnia occurs even after having trouble sleeping at least 3 days a week for 3 consecutive months.
There are reasons for insomnia, such as -
1. Depression,
2. Stress,
3. Alzheimer's disease,
4. Parkinson's Disease,
5. Bipolar Disorder,
6. Drug Abuse,
7. Alcohol consumption,
8. Heavy Smoking,
9. Obstructive Sleep Apnea,
Your bad habits can also affect your sleep. As if -
1. By not sleeping regularly,
2. Working night or evening shifts,
3. Using a laptop or mobile phone in bed while sleeping,
4. Watching TV in Bed,
Certain factors that increase the risk of insomnia such as female gender, age, medical conditions and mental disorders, etc.
Signs or Symptoms of Insomnia
1. In falling sleep,2. Difficulty sleeping,
3. Waking up too early after sleeping,
4. Difficulty performing day-to-day tasks due to less sleep,
5. Problems with concentration and memory,
6. Problems with sleepiness or fatigue during the day,
7. Problems with family, work or social life,
Insomnia Check-
Diagnosis of insomnia involves taking a detailed history of the patient which includes the following questions:
1. About the duration of sleep during the night,
2. Frequency of having difficulty sleeping,
3. Snooze,
4. Medical Condition,
5. About the stressful event that happened in a few days.
Some Tests to Diagnose Insomnia Such as:
1. For CT and MRI imaging tests,
2. Blood tests Blood tests for thyroid disorders, uremia (high uric acid level), anemia (low hemoglobin),
3. The patient may be asked to record in a diary for a period of 2 weeks to know the patient's sleeping time, day time sleep time, night time sleep duration etc,
4. A device called actigraphy is worn on the wrist of the patient while sleeping at night. So that it can detect the activities that happen during sleep.
5. Sleep Quality Tests, measured sleep quality, such as the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality or Insomnia Severity Index,
6. Polysomnography for the detection of sleep disorders in the patient. This is called a sleep study test.
Insomnia Treatment
Treatment for insomnia includes changing sleep habits, doing relaxation exercises, taking medications, and treating the condition that causes insomnia.Follow these sleep habits to help treat insomnia. As if:
1. Always sleep and wake up at regular time.
2. Avoid sleeping during the day.
3. Avoid bright light in the room while sleeping.
4. Avoid distractions like mobile phones, TVs or laptops.
5. Listen to good music.
6. Don't worry or think about stressful events while you sleep.
7. Reduce the intake of coffee or tea in the evening.
8. Reduce smoking or alcohol consumption.
9. Don't think about daily chores or plan chores while trying to sleep.
10. Getting regular light exercise.
11. Even after trying for at least 30 minutes at bedtime, do not lie down on the bed due to lack of sleep. Do an activity that helps you fall asleep.
