Vaptan tablet is prescribed for the treatment of Low levels of sodium in the blood.

Vaptan Tablet Composition :-

Tolvaptan is a vasopressin V2-receptor antagonist.

Vaptan  Tablet Uses :-

Vaptan tablet is used for the treatment of hyponatraemia (decreased blood sodium levels), which can take place due to various conditions like heart failure (heart is unable to pump a enough amount of blood) and certain hormonal imbalances.

Vaptan tablet works by lowering the excretion of sodium from urine and increasing the water content of the urine.

Hyponatremia :

Hyponatraemia refers to an abnormally low concentration of sodium in your blood. Sodium is an electrolyte that helps in controlling fluid and blood volume in the body. Vaptan 15 Tablet higher the sodium level in the blood, thus used in the treatment of hyponatraemia.

Vaptan Tablet Dosage :-

Vaptan tablet should be taken exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Vaptan tablet can be taken with or without food, as suggested by your doctor.
Vaptan tablet can be initiated by your doctor in the hospital with near monitoring of your clinical condition. Once your doctor decides that your condition is suitable to take Vaptan tablet at home, take Vaptan tablet as ordered by your doctor.

Take Vaptan tablet at the same time daily for the ease of remembering.

Avoid taking more than the recommended dose, more frequently than recommended, or for a longer duration, as Vaptan tablet can increase the risk of undesired effects.

After stoping Vaptan tablet, do not start taking Vaptan tablet again on your own as it can cause critical side effects.

How Dose Vaptan Tablet Work :-

Vaptan tablet contains : Tolvaptan.

Tolvaptan is a vasopressin V2-receptor antagonist.

Tolvaptan increases the amount of water in the urine lower the excretion of sodium from the urine, thus increasing the sodium level in the body.

Thus, Vaptan tablet treatment of Low levels of sodium in the blood.

Vaptan Tablet Sideeffects :-

Like all medicines, Vaptan  tablet can cause side effects, however not everyone may experience these side effects.
Some side effects like -

• Nausea,

• Thirst,

• Dry mouth,

• Pollakiuria,

• Dehydration,

• Dizziness,

• Dry skin,

• Headache,

• Urinary frequency/output increased can be many other side effects as well as some side effects. Those that have not been mentioned. However, if you have any experience of any sideeffets and if they do not reduce then consult your doctor.

Precautions :-

• Vaptan tablet is not suggested for use if you are allergic to tolvaptan.

• Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use if you are allergic to tolvaptan. Take immediate medical attention if you undergo any symptoms like skin rash, hives (itchy, painful eruptions that sting), itching/swelling (especially of the face/tongue/throat), severe dizziness, difficulty breathing etc.

• Vaptan tablet can lead to sleepiness.

• Tell your doctor about your pre-existing medical conditions and current medications before starting this treatment. This will help your doctor to manage your dose to avoid undesired effects. 

• Vaptan tablet is not suggested for use if you are pregnant or you are breastfeeding.

• Avoid driving vehicles and operating machines while using Vaptan tablet, as this can make you feel dizzy.

• Unable to sense or retaliate to thirst-

Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use if you are unable to sense or respond to thirst due to the increased risk of critical dehydration.

• Anuria-

Anuria is a state where the kidney is not able to produce urine. Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use in anuria as it can worsen your situation.

• Volume depletion-

Volume depletion mention to the loss of salt and fluid from the body that exceeds intake on a sustained basis. Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use if you have volume depletion as it can give rise to critical dehydration.

• Hypernatraemia-

Hypernatraemia mention to an abnormally high concentration of sodium in your blood. Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use if you have hypernatraemia as it can lead to an further increase in blood sodium levels and worsen your situation.

• Pregnancy-

Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use when you are pregnant as it can harm your developing foetus. 

Consult your doctor if you are pregnant.

• Breast-feeding-

Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use in breastfeeding. Talk to your doctor if you are breastfeeding.

• Dehydration-

Vaptan tablet must be used with caution because of the increased risk of critical dehydration. Drink an adequate amount of water to cure dehydration during treatment with this medicine.

• Use in children-

Vaptan tablet is not prescribed for use in children less than 18 years of age as the safety and efficacy data are not clinically established.

• Driving or operating machines-

Vaptan tablet can occasionally give rise to dizziness and tiredness. Hence, try to avoid driving vehicles and operating machines until you know how this medicine will affects you.

•Interaction with alcohol -

Interaction with alcohol is not known. It is suggested to consult your doctor before taking it.

Disease interactions :

• Liver Disease -

Vaptan tablet must be used with more caution if you have liver problems because of the increased risk of liver injury. Your doctor can advise tests to monitor your liver function while you are taking this medicine. Talk to your doctor immediately if you undergo any symptoms like tiredness, loss of appetite, right upper stomach pain, dark urine, or yellowing of the skin and whites of the eyes.

• Kidney Disease -

Vaptan tablet must be used with more caution if you have kidney problems as it can further worsen your situation. Your doctor can suggest tests to monitor your kidney function while you are taking this medicine.

• Food interactions :

Consumption of grapefruit juice is not suggested during treatment with Vaptan tablet due to the increased risk of critical side effects like difficulty swallowing, trouble speaking, muscle weakness, confusion, mood changes, seizures (fits), etc.

• General Instructions

The first few doses of Vaptan tablet will be given in a hospital with close monitoring of your clinical condition. If you are allowed to take Vaptan tablet at home, follow all the order given by your doctor. Drink an adequate amount of water to cure dehydration during treatment with this medicine.

• Missed Dose -

Since Vaptan tablet is commonly taken in a hospital, under medical supervision, the likelihood of a missed dose is very low. If you are taking this medicine at your home, take the missed dose as soon as possible when you remember. If it is time for the next scheduled dose, dont take the missed dose. Do not use a second dose to make up for the missed dose.

• Overdose :

Never take more than the recommended dose. Take an emergency medical intervention if you suspect an overdose of Vaptan tablet.
