Opg x-ray

Orthopantomogram (OPG) X-ray :

What is a dynamogram (OPG) X-ray?

Orthopantomogram (OPG) X-rays are also known as panoramic dental X-rays.

OPG X-rays are used to capture images of the teeth, jawbones, and surrounding areas in just one film. It helps diagnose dental problems and helps plan procedures such as implants and orthodontics.

X-ray OPG is a two dimensional dental X-ray and non-invasive test. It uses a small amount of radiation to take images of the internal tissues of the body. X-ray technology is one of the most widely used and oldest medical imaging techniques.

The jawbone is a horseshoe-shaped curved structure, but produces a flat image on X-rays. This test helps dentists diagnose various medical conditions. For this type of X-ray, the film is placed inside the machine, whereas in conventional X-rays, the film is placed in the patient's mouth.

Why is OPG X-ray done?

This can be done to help with the following types of diagnosis:

tooth position and other bone abnormalities
jaw tumor and oral cancer
Other impacted teeth including wisdom teeth x
sinusitis
advanced periodontal disease
cyst in jaw bone
jaw disorders
erosion of the jawbone due to gum disease or missing teeth
tooth decay, especially under a filling or between two teeth
dental infections, including abscesses under the gum line or under a tooth
Hyperdontia and hypodontia (a genetic condition of having too many or too few teeth)
misaligned jaw
jaw fracture
This test can also help with surgery and treatment planning for dentures, extractions, braces, and implants.

How to prepare for OPG X-ray?

You do not need any extra preparation for this exam. Take off your jewelry, glasses and other accessories, as these can affect the test results. You may need to wear a lead apron to protect yourself from exposure to scattered radiation from the X-ray. You should inform your doctor if you are pregnant or there is any possibility of you becoming pregnant. So that necessary precautions can be taken to protect the fetus growing in the womb from radiation.

What is the procedure of OPG X-ray?

Procedure for OPG X-ray:

You will be placed in the center of the equipment.
The technician will set you up in the device and secure your head.
The device can be adjusted to a sitting or standing position, depending on whether the patient is in a wheelchair or standing.
A bite-blocker will be inserted in your mouth to keep the teeth in a row.
Proper placement of the head and teeth helps in obtaining a clear and accurate image.
You must remain still while the rotating arm of the machine is moving in a semicircle around your head. During this the photographs are taken.
It takes 12 to 20 seconds to take these pictures.

opg x ray is painless
gets easier
gives quick results
If you have a sensitive gag reflex, X-rays can be done by placing the film in your mouth.

What are the results of OPG X-ray?

X-rays may indicate any of the following conditions:

infection, such as sinusitis, periodontitis, or periapical abscess
tumor or radicular cyst
foreign body localization
caries or pulp root disease
sialolithiasis (salivary stones)
fracture or dislocation of the temporomandibular joint
diseases of the temporomandibular joint
facial bone disease
dental trauma
jaw fracture

Risks and benefits of OPG X-ray:

Advantages of OPG X-ray:

X-rays usually have no side effects within the diagnostic range that is commonly used.
After the X-ray, the radiation is completely removed from the patient's body.
OPG X-rays do not require film to be placed inside the mouth, so it can be easily performed even in young children.

Risks associated with OPG X-rays:

Inform your doctor in advance if you are pregnant or may become pregnant. Because exposure to radiation can cause birth defects to develop in the fetus.
What happens after an OPG X-ray?
You can go home immediately after this and continue with your daily activities.

What other tests are done along with the OPG X-ray?

Other tests such as periapical radiographs or CT scans may be done along with OPG X-rays.
