Hiatal Hernia

Hiatal hernia :
Hiatal hernia is also known as stomach hernia.

This is a condition in which part of the stomach pushes up through the diaphragm muscle.
In this, part of the stomach pushes into the chest cavity. It enters from opening where the food tube (oesophagus) passes on its way to the stomach.

symptoms :
Hiatus hernias can have no symptoms. In some of the cases, they can be connected with heartburn and abdominal discomfort.
Can have no symptoms, but people may undergo:
- Pain in the abdomen or chest area,
- Gastrointestinal: belching, hiccup, nausea, regurgitation, heartburn or vomiting,
- Throat irritation is also common.

Treatment :
Hiatus hernias may not needed any treatment. Some are treated with drugs and a few types only need surgical repair.
- Weight loss : Can improve cardiovascular health and lower the risk of complications related to obesity.
- Proton-pump inhibitor : Reduce acid release in the stomach.
- Antacid : Prevent the effects of stomach acid.
 Surgery :
- Nissen fundoplication : Surgery to strengthen the valve between the stomach and the esophagus. Makes it harder for stomach acid to go up the oesophagus.
- Hernia repair : Surgical repair of a weak spot on the abdominal wall so that the intestines can not push through.
- Laparoscopic surgery : Surgery that uses a video camera and thin tubes which is inserted into small cuts on the body to repair or take out tissue.
