Pioglitazone acts through activation of specific nuclear receptors (peroxisome proliferator activated receptor gamma), thus increasing insulin sensitivity of liver, adipose and skeletal muscle cells. Pioglitazone reduces hepatic glucose production and increases peripheral glucose disposal in case of insulin resistance.
Thus, Pioglitazone control high blood sugar levels in type 2 diabetes mellitus.
